Go Hiking and Be Focused

Focus is important in life and its no different on the trail. You need to pay attention to where you put your feet unless you want to end up on your face or back.

Once you have reached the top of a mountain you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Still, what if a cougar crept up behind you? Not good.

The Wide View

There are two kinds of vision you can use in the mountains which keep you focused in different ways. The first is the wide view. Don’t just focus on one thing, but take in the entire scene in from to of you and around you. It is a different way of seeing but useful.

With the wide view, you are scanning for danger and enjoying the differences in forest. You are very present in the moment so it is like a meditation.

The Narrow View

With this view, your eyes are focused on one thing. Usually, this is why you are climbing around an obstacle or scrambling up a rock face. You have to focus your vision or you will fall.

The narrow view is also useful in swatting mosquitoes. This reminds me that I have not seen mosquitoes in the mountains these last couple of years. I wonder why? Maybe I have just been fortunate and had a breeze blowing. But no, there are fewer birds too. Maybe it is civilization being too close.

The Inner View

If you are hiking a relatively easy terrain, which does happen during a hike, then take some time to go inside. Focus on your feelings at the moment. Focus on how your body feels. Focus on your breath. Focus on how you are doing mentally. Pray!

If you are someone who rarely takes the time to examine your life, this is an excellent opportunity to do that. You may discover things you didn’t know about yourself.

So go hiking and be focused!

Go Hiking And Be Aware

How hard could it be to be aware when your hiking? You have to pay attention or you fall. Of course, Anthony De Mello is not talking about that kind of awareness. He says it is the kind where you don’t care whether you live or die. I reviewed his book and you can read more about it there.

So I will take a little license here to just discuss awareness when it comes to hiking.

Nature

When you are in nature you are going back to your roots as a human. It is, after all where we all lived our lives many moons ago. Now we are surrounded by concrete and skyscrapers. It is far from natural.

One could argue that cars and concrete require a lot of awareness. You have to avoid being hit by a car. But it is actually awareness filled with distractions. People looking at their phones. You are really not aware.

Cell Phones

These devices are not just in the city. People take them on hikes. That would be fine if they left them in their pocket for emergencies, but they don’t. I see people talking on their phone while hiking up a trail. Please don’t do that. It insults your surroundings!

How can you be aware of wild things or dangers if you are on your phone? It is a deadly habit in the woods. I remember an instance when I was running down a trail and came upon a young lady with earpieces in place. She couldn’t hear me coming. So I scared her and she screamed. Good thing I was not a bear.

I suppose it will be much better when instead of the cell phone we all have the chip in our head and will be scrolling Instagram in our mind. Just as dangerous I would presume, but what do I know about chips in our heads?

In the meantime, keep the phone in your pocket until you want to take a picture. Listen to the wind in the trees and the silence. Be aware of your surroundings.

Go Hiking Because The End Is Always Near

It is always good to keep danger in the back of your mind as you climb. Alpinists face it all the time and to a much greater degree. However, weekend hikers can do face plants as I have done, break bones, like I have done or run into some wildlife. However, there is less chance of catching the new Coronavirus from China when you are out in nature away from people.

“Danger, Danger, Will Robinson”

Some of you don’t remember that quote and some do. It was a computer of sorts talking, but when you hike you do not have any warning for what might happen.

So don’t have an earpiece, listening to music as you climb. Use your ears to hear something before it sees you. It might even be a tree falling toward you in the wind. Save the podcast listening for the treadmill at the gym. Besides, you will miss the singing of the birds.

Snow

If you hike in the snow, be sure to stay away from avalanche areas. Don’t even trust the reports. Just don’t climb there. Too many people have died because of ignorance or testosterone poisoning.

I am sure I have mentioned this before, but if you go in the snow take your Microspikes or at least Yaktracks. They will save you from injury. Sure, I know you young folks have better balance than me, but why take chances?

High Winds

You need to listen so you can hear a tree coming down, but the best way to avoid being crushed is to stay home when there are gale force winds in the mountains. Why push it? Remember, Risk = Danger Times Exposure. You might get away with it once, but be exposed long enough and you might not.

A little wind is good. It blows the stink off of you ad keeps you awake. The sound of it is soothing as well.

The main thing to keep in mind, of course, is that “The End Is Always Near.”

Bookish Weapon Number Twenty-Nine

Dave Asprey’s book Super Human is the kind of book that gives people hope. At least that is my take on it. He is the rich guy that has said he is going to live until he is 180. Maybe it was only 150 years. That is a long time.

Right now it costs a lot of money to take the supplements, get the procedures done and buy the equipment and devices necessary to prolong your life. For example, recently Ben Greenfield, who also reports on longevity, did a solo podcast where he told everyone exactly what supplements he took every day. One of the listeners added it up and it would cost you over $800 a month. Now Ben doesn’t pay that much because companies send him the product for free or he uses his own supplement company. And Ben probably takes less than Dave Asprey.

So I suppose it depends on your station in life. If you have the money you can do it and it is only going to get better as new things are developed. There are also many things Dave recommends that do not cost a thing.

So let’s dig into Dave’s book and see what you can use now, even if you are poor, to extend your life.

The Four Killers

This is the title of his first chapter. In it, he discusses heart disease, diabetes Alzheimers and Cancer. In his discussion of heart disease, he links mold exposure to it and inflammation. With diabetes, he says, “High blood sugar also causes dangerous nerve damage by injuring the walls of the capillaries the bring blood and nutrients to your nerves. This is called peripheral artery disease and it is especially common in the legs and feet which is why you may have heard of people suffering from diabetes needing foot or leg amputations.” He says that “The risk of diabetes was reduced by 32% in this with even moderate muscle strength.” That is certainly worth considering. Do some lifting and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Dave discusses Alzheimer’s and how inflammation is once again a culprit. He says the earlier you attack this the less likely you will have this disease as you age.

With Cancer, he says it is a “double-edged sword when it comes to anti-aging. Any time you do something that makes your cells grow faster and get younger, you are inherently increasing your cancer risk because cancer cells can potentially grow and rejuvenate along with the healthy ones. Then you end up with this weird dichotomy. You can grow old “normally” with a roughly 40% chance of getting cancer, or you can get younger and maybe as a result slightly increase your risk.” He goes on to discuss the benefits of autophagy. Fasting promotes autophagy and during this process, your body scans for damaged cells and eliminates them. The process also reduces inflammation. Autophagy is why I fast.

What More You Can Do

There is far more here than I can tell you so be sure to buy the book, but here are a few things. Work at lengthening your Telomeres. They get shorter as you age. There is a synthetic peptide called Epitalon. It increases mice’s lives by 13% Dave says. You will discover that a lot of these things work very well on mice. Keep in mind you are not a mouse. Another one Dave mentions is TA-65.

Food is a big topic for Dave. You especially shouldn’t eat the combination of protein and sugar. Not too much meat and be sure the meat you do eat is good quality. However, if you are old like me keep in mind that the risks of over-consuming protein decrease after age 65. That is because old people like me do not absorb it as well. I have read elsewhere you should take in more protein when you are older, not less.

Fasting

I mentioned this above but Dave gets into it a couple of times. He says, ..in 2019 scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology discovered that just fifty-eight hours of fasting dramatically increases levels of forty-four different metabolites, including thirty that were previously unrecognized.”

I have fasted for as long as three days, but typically 15 or 16 hours a day. I think it is worth it and I do feel a lot better afterward. Especially after I eat!

Sleep

Dave has a whole chapter on sleep. He talks about his Aura ring that measures his sleep. I use a Whoop which does even more. Dave says teens need 1.7 to 2 hours of deep sleep per night and if over 18 need 1.5 to 1.8 hours. Oh, before he tells you all this he tells you that if you don’t get enough sleep it will kill you. He makes some cheaper sleep tracking recommendations too. Read the book!

The Brain

Dave says that none of us should experience impaired cognition as we age, but it happens and Dave says, “…we jokingly refer to instances of forgetfulness as “senior moments’ instead of calling them out for what they are – symptoms of dysfunction that are also precursors of Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia.” So do you remember what you just read in the first paragraph of this post?

Dave suggests Neurofeedback for improving your brain, light therapy and avoiding certain foods. He quotes a doctor Bredsen as saying, “the biggest risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease are chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and exposure to toxins.”

“Lights that blink forty timesecome Super Human  a second can break up amyloid tangles in the brain.” Maybe at some point you will be able to get something like this. Right now there are those working to get them in nursing homes.

Dave says that if you stop eating sugar you will reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s dramatically. He says to take 400 to 1000 mcg of chromium picolinate daily with 25 to 100 mg of vanadyl sulfate at the time you eat carbohydrates.

Go Hiking And Widen Your Window

Yes, “Widen Your Window” is the subject of this week’s Bookish Weapon so I thought I would play with that idea a little when it comes to hiking.

The author is talking about widening possible responses in times of stress. One of the ways to do that is to get out into nature.

Relaxing

Being in the woods is relaxing. Even when you are pushing hard up the mountain you can smell the wild strawberries, the bark on the trees, and sometimes if you’re lucky, smoke. Yes, smoke! So maybe smoke is one only I would like and a certain kind of smoke.

When I was small I would spend time with my father clearing land. We would dynamite a stump or two and then burn them. The odor from the stump burning is what has stayed with me. So whenever it is in the air it takes me back.

Getting Away

If you are heading for the mountains it means you are not worrying about work or problems. Your mind is focused on the climb. You leave your cell phone wrapped up in your backpack. Yes, I know many don’t, but they should keep it tucked away. Distractions like that are unwelcome in the woods and you will not be widening your window.

Unless you live close to the mountains, it takes a while to get there. This trip helps me detach from my life back home. By the time I am at the trailhead, I am in a different world both physically and mentally.

Use The Exercise

One of the exercises in this book is developing an awareness of the contact between our body and immediate surroundings. She has you sit in a chair for this, but you can do it on the trail. Feel your feet on the ground and the wind on your face.

I think you could even use the trail to release stress. When you reach a quiet spot, take a deep breath and exhale while imagining all of your stress and tension leaving your body. It works great and I have a particular place I like for doing this.

Go Hiking And Climb Granite Mountain

Go Hiking and Climb Granite Mountain, Bandera and Bear Mountain

These three mountains are ones that I climb infrequently so I thought I would lump them together.

Granite Mountain

If you like being in the sun Granite mountain delivers. Most of it is out of the woods so it can get pretty hot in the summer. Bring a lot of water.

It is not a particularly difficult climb, but there are a good number of rocks. I broke both of my trekking poles coming down this mountain a few years ago because they got caught in some rocks.

There are a couple of significant avalanche shoots so take care to stay away in the winter. It is called unnecessary risk.

Lookout

Like all mountains, getting to the top of Granite is the goal. On top of Granite is a lookout. It is not as nice as the one on Pilchuck, but you can sit and look at the view which includes the freeway.

I suppose Granite mountain is not my favorite climb. Maybe it is because it took my trekking poles. All mountains are unpredictable. Still, all the mountains are worth climbing at least once. It is actually a very popular hike and is close by off of I-90.

It has been a while since I climbed it. Maybe I should reconsider, forgive the mountain and give it another shot.

Bandera

The two outstanding things about Bandera are how steep it is and how short it is. It is supposed to be 8 miles round trip. Maybe. It does get steep but has a nice view of a lake at the top. It is right off of I-90 so once again a mountain that is close.

Bear Mountain

Confession, I only climbed this mountain twice, years ago. Like Granite mountain, there is a considerable amount of the trail exposed to the sun. I also remember lots of mosquitoes. But don’t stay away just because I do. Check it out yourself! Go hiking!
